It all began when I received a letter from a convicted serial killer - Bobby Joe Long. Now Bobbby Joe is not your typical Casanova, but  just like so many other incarcerated men – even guys on death row – he had scores of women falling head over heels for him.

It made no sense to me. What was his attraction? Incredibly - it was - ROMANCE.  Bobby Jo Long’s letter included an original poem and a drawing of a long-stemmed rose.

Ah, roses. How romantic. Right? You know, a lot of guys in prison catch on to the power of romance. They become experts at wooing women from behind bars, using whatever tricks they can to charm ladies on the outside. And they know that roses equal romance.

But how can they send roses? Well, some men, like Bobby Jo Long, simply draw them in a letter. While other craftier inmates make a paper flower out of toilet paper. One lady I spoke with received an entire bouquet of toilet paper flowers.

Many women are being courted and romanced by incarcerated men - with flattery, special attention, gifts, and cards. Now, for the men behind bars, this may be just another trick up their sleeves. But for the women who receive the flowers, the poetry, the attention, the flattery, suddenly they’re feeling cherished and adored in a way they may never have before.
